Looking for some fun activities to spice up your study of history? This living history resource fits the bill. The premise is that students enter a time machine and visit different places in history. The time periods are grouped into four areas: ancient cultures, Native American culture, colonial America and pioneers. Within each time period, your student can rotate through 14 - 18 stations, sampling activities and culture in each. In the home setting, you would obviously just do the activities as they came up in your study. I think this would be great fun to do in a co-op setting, perhaps as a culmination activity.

Let's look at one of the time periods. On ancient cultures day, children first visit the ancient near eat where they make a map, timeline, cuneiform piece and a lyre, like King David's. In ancient Egypt, they also do a map, timeline, write their name in hieroglyphics and make and learn to play the oware game. In ancient China, they make clay figures and calligraphy scrolls. In Greece, they make paper sandals and learn to write their name in Greek. In Rome, they examine a calendar with Roman months, made a mosaic and learn about Roman numerals. Each area contains complete instructions and cut out patterns where needed.

If you are doing this in a group setting, there are instructions on how to run the event as well as sample letters to send to the participants and helpers.

If you have thought of producing a history fair, IT'S ALL HERE! If you need an idea to accompany your individual study, you will find a wealth of them here.
