Fringe Pouch Kit

Corps of Re-Discovery

5329 N Lakewood Drive
Springfield, MO 65803

This kit from Corps of Re-Discovery allows you to make a fringed pouch for holding your treasures similar to those once carried by Native American Indians. The kit makes a sturdy pouch of strong yet supple leather that measures 5½" x 6" and closes with drawstring straps. The pouch has long fringe along the bottom and can be decorated with beads, rosettes or antler buttons also offered on the website.

Everything you need is in the kit, including pre-punched leather pieces and fringe, needle, laces and instructions. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. My 8-year-old daughter was able to put the bag together, on her own, with relative ease. I helped in laying out the pieces and in attaching the drawstring, which was a little tricky. The quality of leather used in the pouch is impressive. Our one negative was that there was a weak spot in one of the drawstring pieces and it broke as we were attempting to get it laced. Fortunately, the pieces were long enough that we were able to shorten the strings and it worked fine.

This was a fun and easy project that added to our enjoyment in learning about Native Americans. I tried to convince my daughter to give the pouch to one of her younger brothers as a nice Christmas gift, but she's unwilling to part with it. I guess that means it was a hit with her, also.
