Sometimes I Feel Lonely is a 64-page e-book and study guide that helps children understand and deal with loneliness. It is written specifically to the person who feels "isolated and sad because no one seems to care or understand." Intended for nine to thirteen-year-olds, this e-book is appropriate for personal or group study. I think it would be especially effective for mothers and daughters (or fathers and sons) to go through together. It could be beneficial for older children too.
The book portion of Sometimes I Feel Lonely is comprised of 30 pages. In this section, the author defines loneliness, explains the difference between loneliness and aloneness, and divulges the secret of how not to be lonely. All this is done in a sweet, caring tone. Miiko Gibson speaks with the gentleness and reassurance of someone who has been there; her life experience certainly shines through. Each chapter contains only a few pages, making the book an easy, manageable read.
The study guide portion is approximately 20 pages long and corresponds to each chapter in the book section. The author directs her readers to think things over by asking specific questions, many of which require personal reflection. She also encourages children to dig a little deeper by examining related Scriptures. Space is provided for students to record their thoughts. (Nine notebooking pages are also included at the end of the book.) Every study guide chapter concludes with a list of things to do. This is a great way for children to apply what they are learning and makes the book very practical.
Despite a few minor grammatical errors, I am pleased with this book. I enjoyed Gibson's conversational tone and found her examples and explanations to be very clear. She writes in a way that her intended age group can truly comprehend.
With God at its center, Sometimes I Feel Lonely provides practical tools for understanding and overcoming loneliness. Christian families will find it to be a very useful resource.
