Visualizing the Tabernacle of Old Testament times can be a difficult thing to do, especially for children. The paper model of the Tabernacle that you assemble from this book is a super way to help your child see and understand more about this building required by God in early Bible times.
To begin, you and your children read a full-color, 22-page retelling of the Bible from Abraham through David. The book focuses on the basic history of the Old Testament as it relates to the need for a Tabernacle and the history of it until the time it rests in Jerusalem during David's reign. Plenty of illustrations, photographs, charts, and maps go along with the simple-to-understand text. Even though some of the details are left out in the retelling, the text gives a great overview of the time period!
As you read about the Tabernacle and its purposes, you pull out the pieces from a pocket at the back of the book and construct your own mini-Tabernacle. The construction pieces are made of a card-stock type of material that is laminated on one side. You must punch out each part and connect tabs, glue, or make folds for the pieces to connect to one another. In the end, you have a colorful and complete model of every part of the Tabernacle inside and out. A direction sheet is given that is fairly clear. Once the model is constructed, it cannot be taken apart and reused. But some individual pieces and parts can be moved around and examined as you continue to read through the book and learn more about each part's function. Since the model is made from paper, it isn't very strong and sturdy, but it should last long enough to get the main point of the book across to your children.
My children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on aspect this book added to our Bible study time. We all have a much better understanding of the Tabernacle after having completed the model and read through the book. I recommend this product for children 3rd grade and older simply because of the small parts and the intricate work required to put the model together.
