Our family has always loved lap books and reading time with mom or dad during those preschool years. However, what we encountered with Is that a Bat? by Innovative Kids blew our minds.

This hardback book has wonderful eye appeal. It combines fun cartoon-like characters and backdrops with 40 real photos of animals. Is that a Bat? is about nocturnal animals, with the bat being the center of attention. Exploring the concept of what it means to be nocturnal and investigating whether different animals are nocturnal by nature are the theme of this book.

The science terminology does not stop with nocturnal. The author is very specific in naming the animals by their true names. It is not just a butterfly--it is a luna moth. Is just any old ordinary squirrel nocturnal? No, this is a special squirrel--a flying squirrel.

Is this too much for preschoolers? At first I thought so. However, just ask our four-year-old, and he will have a very different opinion as he shares with you about the different types of bats and their characteristics as shown on the back inside cover of Is that a Bat? by Innovative Kids.
