What better gift to give a Christian homeschooling parent than a commentary on history from a Biblical perspective? I can't think of one, so you can imagine my joy when I received the Annals of the World by James Ussher from Answers in Genesis.

James Ussher was a bishop who believed he could write a history using the Bible as his base. He took the Biblical dates at face value and arranged all other dates around that. He sought to glorify God and uplift His time line as supreme. In doing this, he created a wonderful masterpiece for us to enjoy. This new work modernizes the language of the original work but is true to Ussher and does not add in anything that would change the essence of the original. There are maps and pictures and a clearer dating system throughout the book so that many will be able to understand this newer version much more easily. The book is in two volumes. The first volume contains six subcategories called "Ages of the World." The second volume contains only one section. There is a bibliography and many appendices. There are writings from Ussher and those who worked on his Annals to update it. Lastly, there is an index for quicker reference.

While Ussher was very thorough in his commentary, there are a few things missing. (For instance, I saw no reference to the Queen of Sheba visiting Solomon.) But those seem to be few and far between. Ussher was so detailed that he even set a date (month, day of week, year) for the beginning of the world! You have to admire his diligence. It must have taken a lot of patience to go through all the dates in the Bible and synchronize them. I, for one, am glad he did.

This work is just under a thousand pages. It starts with the beginning of time and ends with AD 73. James Ussher's Annals of the World deserves to be in every Christian home as a fixture and a constant testament to the glory of God.
