For review, I recently received the subscription introduction packet from the Coin of the Month Club. Included was a letter from Anna Grace Windwrite and Charlie the Piper Cub (the club "mascots"), an official Coin of the Month Club decal, a magnifying glass for coin inspection, a coin pouch to hold coins from the entire subscription, one world coin from India, and a Fun Fact Adventure card about that coin and the country it came from. I also received two additional coins, one from Russia and one from the Congo, and Fun Fact Adventure cards for each. This provided us with everything we would have received for a three-month subscription.
The Coin of the Month Club offers three levels of membership: a 3-month subscription ($12.50 plus $4.50 shipping), a 6-month subscription ($25.00 plus $9.00 shipping), or a 12-month subscription ($49.50 including free shipping and a bonus fourth-century Roman coin). Also offered is a special one time "two coin/two card" shipment (for $7.95 plus $1.50 shipping). While I felt the subscription fees were reasonable, I really thought the addition shipping charges were a bit excessive, particularly when you consider that the items being sent were lightweight and could be shipped in a stiff envelope mailer.
The Fun Fact Adventure cards were definitely the most interesting part of the kit, aside from the actual coins themselves. These cards provide geographic information of the country represented (including a world map with the country highlighted), a drawing of the country's flag, historical information, and information regarding the currency of that particular country. The Coin of the Month Club website provides additional information about each country in "Anna's Journal."
Since my 13-year-old son is somewhat of an amateur coin collector, I asked his opinion on the items we received. He enjoyed looking at the coins and reading the Fun Fact Adventure cards. However, I think the materials might be more suited to children a bit younger.
Overall this is an intriguing concept, but one that I thought could use a bit more "fleshing out," particularly for the amount of money one is investing.
