This picture book for elementary-aged children is a modern-day version of "The Happy Prince," a fairy tale by Oscar Wilde. It begins with a one-page biography of Oscar Wilde. At the end of the book, you will find a little summary about homelessness in America (with a bit of a liberal slant) and a list of some simple ways children can help others.

The story is about a statue of a prince who, with the help of a swallow, gives his entire splendor to help people in need. It is a beautiful story of self-sacrifice that is as relevant today as when it was originally written. The book's illustrations are realistic, detailed paintings that draw the listener right into the various scenarios.

The publisher's website has excellent downloadable teacher's guides for many of their titles, including this one. Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince would make a lovely gift or a nice addition to one's home library.
